A septic alarm going off means one thing for certain: the system wants attention. It almost never means sewage is about to come into the house.
Take a breath on that point. The alarm is not a smoke detector telling you to get out. It is closer to the low-fuel light in a car. A condition has been reached, usually a water level or a pump issue, and you have been told early, on purpose, while there is still room to respond.
Not every septic system even has one. What the alarm is actually watching

Floats are simple devices, just switches that tip as the water rises, and one of them sits above the normal operating range doing nothing at all. If water ever reaches it, the buzzer sounds. Here is the design logic worth understanding: the alarm float is set well below “full.” The chamber above it holds a reserve, often enough for a day or so of careful, reduced water use in a typical household.
