Millbury is where the region’s sewage actually goes, and plenty of Millbury homes still can’t send theirs there.

The Upper Blackstone treatment plant, the facility that serves Worcester, Auburn, and the surrounding system, sits on Millbury’s stretch of the Blackstone River. The villages that grew up around the old mills, Millbury center, Bramanville, the river-flat neighborhoods, are sewered. But Millbury is a valley town, and the roads that climb east and west out of the valley leave the mains behind quickly. The Millbury Board of Health publishes its Title 5 procedures and forms, from perc test applications to installer licensing to the paperwork for formally abandoning an old cesspool. For an owner, the sequence still starts the same way everywhere: an evaluation that establishes what is actually buried out there, which on Millbury’s older lots is a genuinely open question.
